The other day I had a dream that involved repeatedly throwing a couple of ‘possums out the door and before I could pull the door shut, they were back in the house. So today I am subjecting you all to the energies of the North and South American Opossum. Not to be confused with the Australian Possum, that, while similar, is still a different animal.

I mentioned this dream and how frustrated I was in the dream and they commented “What are you trying to throw away that you  still need? That  made me pause and rethink some things.

My first take for Opossum has always been related to it being the only North American marsupial. Meaning it has a pouch with which one could carry other people’s problems and the necessity of returning the problems to their owners to deal with. As long as we are handling these things, they do not learn the lessons involved.

But diving a bit deeper I think about how they “Play Dead.” While some say this means having plans and backup plans because they voluntarily assume this stance, the truth is this is something the OP has no control over. And it may even leave them vulnerable, because they also have no control over how long it lasts. It could be minutes or several hours! They also give off a very foul smell akin to the smell of actual death. Are we finding ourselves avoiding things, situations or people because we don’t want to, or more likely, we don’t know how to deal with them? Do we make ourselves difficult to be around so they stay away?

As a mother figure an Opossum can be seen as either a great maternal energy because she carries her young on her back after they no longer fit in her pouch, or as going through the motions of caring but if you “fall off” it all becomes on you to survive, because she won’t come looking for you. Were you not strong enough to hold on for the whole journey?

On a more positive note they do have a prehensile tail, meaning Opossum can use it to grasp things. This can allow us to feel more balanced and/or allow us to reach things or oportunities out of our comfort zone. 

So back to my dream. What do I need to look at right now? I feel there is a lot of shadow work in the Opossum’s energy, but nothing I can’t handle if I am willing to reach beyond my own self-instilled limitations. Even if I have to redo it a few times.
